On 3rd June 2023, about three million enthusiastic pilgrims from across the globe thronged Namugongo to attend the Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations. This was in honour of the 22 Catholic and 23 Anglican martyrs killed between 1885 and 1887.

The historic event has increasingly attracted both local and international attention making Uganda one of the top religious tourism destinations.

A tour of Kampala is incomplete without a visit to Namgugongo shrine.
