Following years of working with the endangered mountain gorillas, the wildlife Veterinarian, conservationist, Co-founder and CEO of Conservation Through Public Health, Dr. Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka, published a memoir titled “Walking with Gorillas: The Journey of an African Wildlife Vet.”
In this inspiring book, Dr. Gladys reflects on her childhood (early life as a student), living through the death of her father during the Military Coup, her education (Veterinary medicine) in England, setting up Uganda’s first Veterinary department and establishing one of the premier Organizations in the World that allow local community members to coexist with wildlife by bettering their wellbeing and health – Conservation Through Public Health.
This book acknowledges her passion and determination to building a great future for local wildlife as well as human community in the face of discrimination and a male-dominated World. About Dr. Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka
Dr Gladys is a Ugandan wildlife Veterinarian, conservationist, and co-founder of Conservation Through Public Health (CTPH). CTPH is a Non-Governmental Organization that is committed to promoting the coexistence of endangered mountain Gorillas, other wildlife species, livestock, and humans around Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Renowned for being the first Ugandan wildlife Veterinary Officer, she was the star of the BBC Documentary “Gladys the African Vet”, in addition to winning several awards for her remarkable and relentless Conservation Work.
Her professional journey started after winning a scholarship to study Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine in the University of London. She later set up the first Veterinary Department in Uganda Wildlife Authority. Dr. Gladys later obtained a Master of Veterinary Medicine from North Carolina State University in 2003.
This passionate Wildlife Veterinarian is also known for leading a team that examined the first Scabies outbreak in Mountain Gorillas that led to death of several infants as well as sickness of other members in the affected gorilla families. Dr. Gladys has also won a number of awards and received a number of recognitions for her incredible work and these include the Whitley Gold Award in 2009, the Conservation in Action Award given by San Diego Zoo in 2008, recognition as one of the 8 Revolutionary minds in Science in 2007 by the Seeds Magazine,
the EarthCare Award by Sierra Club in 2018, was named UNEP’s Champion of the Earth for Science and Innovation in 2021 and won the Edinburg Medal in 2022 among others.
