Uganda’s chimpanzee tracking options have increased after Bugoma Forest was officially open for tourism.
At the moment, there are two habituated chimpanzee communities comprising of 60-70 chimps. Mwera North is currently reserved for research purposes and Mwera South for ecotourism.
As advocates for primate conservation and sustainable tourism practices, Adventure consults is excited by the new development as it will lessen the pressure on other chimpanzee tracking spots.
Other places to see Chimpanzees in Uganda are Kibale Forest National Park, Kyambura Gorge of Queen Elizabeth National Park, and Kanio pabidi which is part of the Murchison falls conservation area.
Bugoma Forest is an iconic location that supports a diversity of other primate species like Grey-cheeked mangabey, vervet monkeys, black and white Colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, and Blue monkeys. Available information indicates that Bugoma forest is also home to buffaloes, forest elephants, side-stripped jackals, golden cats, and Uganda Kobs. This is in addition to over 225 species of Birds, of which others are globally threatened (Guinea-Congo Biome species and others).
New itineraries with Bugoma forest chimpanzee tracking are available on request and others will be published under our safari section.
