There are not many known cities with nature walking opportunities but Rwanda’s Kigali city, stands out to be one of the few.

Approximately 15 to 25 minutes’ drive from the hotel in Kigali, is Umusambi Village. This is a beautifully restored wetland area, providing a sanctuary for over 50 endangered Grey Crowned Cranes saved from the illegal pet trade. These majestic birds have been disabled as a result of captivity and are unable to be returned to the wild. Their new permanent home provides an enriching environment for them to enjoy nature again.

The 21-hectare nature reserve is a peaceful haven for you to enjoy the walking trails and get close to nature. You learn about Rwanda’s conservation work and the importance of protecting the natural environments.

Umusambi villages is also a sanctuary of so many other bird species including various species of storks, sunbirds and the colorful turacos. So please, carry your notebook to tick off bird sightings.
