The NWC was started by 18 Rwandan women in 2007, living in the central busy part of Kigali city called Nyamirambo. Some of these women were victims of gender-based violence, inequality, and discrimination in society. They put their minds together and came up with an initiative aimed at addressing the pressing issues. The initiative later developed into a cooperative called ‘Umutima’ with an aim of enhancing self-sustenance among women.
As of year 2025, there are over 60 women employed as dressmakers, and women from various cooperatives contribute their weaving talents through contracts with NWC. The cooperative has made great strides through providing education and training of the unprivileged women, who in turn provide for their families.
In order to create more opportunities to community livelihoods, preserve and promote the rich heritage of Nyamirambo, the amazing women offer a number of activities. Every tour at the centre begins with Kinyarwanda speaking lessons.
