Walkable distance from the major 5* hotels in Kigali is the Richard Kandt house museum. The Kandt House Museum was previously known as the Kandt House Museum of Natural History.
Richard Kandt was the first colonial governor of Rwanda, on behalf of Germany, until the early 1900s. your visit to the museum will give you an opportunity to learn about the Rwandan life in all its aspects – social, economic, and political – before the colonial period.
The museum has also a section for the Rwandan people during the colonial period. Following the Berlin Conference in 1884, the Germans ruled Rwanda until 1916, when the Belgians took over under the League of Nations Mandate after World War I. The Richard Kadt Museum is open daily from 8am to 6pm, but closed on these days; 11am to 6pm on Umuganda days (the last Saturday of the month) and on 7th April of every year.
