The Nyamirambo women center offers both general and special cooking classes. You can choose to do one or both. The general cooking class is the highly recommended as you get introduced to the typical Rwandan cuisine/local food.

The cooking class starts with going out for a guided shopping experience at the local market and shops, talk to the people, walk around freely without any worries of getting dirty (it’s part of the experience). Your items will be delivered at the center by a trusted motorcycle-taxi lady with whom you bargain and agree to a fee (it’s a local experience remember!). You may also get on a motorcycle taxi – locally known as ‘Motto’ or take a walk or get into Adventure Consults vehicle back to the center and return to the center for the cooking session.

At the center, the ladies will give you a full briefing, get the ingredients ready and start the meal preparation. A typical Rwandan meal consists of boiled beans or groundnut paste as the main source, bananas, sweet potatoes or cassava. Umutsima (a dish of cassava and corn), isombe (cassava leaves with Eggplant and spinach) and mizuzu (fried plantains) among others. There will always be stews of either chicken, beef or fish to make the meal tastier.

As the meal is being prepared, listen to interesting stories about Rwanda as you snack on fresh fruits. When the meal is ready, participate in the serving and enjoy the meal. Nothing tastes better than serving yourself an own prepared local meal.
