Rwanda; well known as a land of a thousand Hills, but also qualifies for a land of close to a thousand Birds!
The small, compacted country in the heart of Africa, remarkably with diverse habitats has got 703 Bird species out of which 29 are Albertine Rift Endemics.
The best birding spots in Rwanda are her famous National parks and Lake Kivu. Nyungwe National Park, Akagera National Park, Volcanoes National Park, Gishwati-Mukura National Park, Lake Kivu, Wetlands, and some major towns.
The tropical montane rainforest of Nyungwe is home to 322 bird species, the savannah Akagera National park with rolling hills, lakes, wetlands and woodlands has got 490 Bird species, over 200 bird species have been recorded in the heaily vegetated Volcanoes National Park, over 232 Bird species have been recorded at Gishwati and Mukura 163 species including several Albertine Rift Endemics and forest specialists.
Rwanda has got several wetlands and marshes which covers close to 10% of the country’s total area. Rugezi, Akanyaru Wetlands, and Nyabarongo Wetlands have been declared Important Bird Areas.
