Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary
Situated on Lake Victoria (Uganda), 23km off-shore from Entebbe is the chimpanzee sanctuary, a home to 49 lucky chimpanzees that were saved from being destined for life as a pet, Circus or in a lab by heartless individuals. The chimpanzees were all confiscated by authorities and brought to the sanctuary for care and rehabilitation. The beautifully forested tropical island is almost 100 acres in size and boasts over 50 different types of vegetation that the chimps utilize. The chimpanzees are free to roam this forest, exploring their environment and foraging for food at their leisure.
We have two departures every day, one in the morning with the boat setting off at 9am and afternoon setting off at 1pm. everyone must be at the pier 30 minutes before departure time for registration and briefing.
Adventure Consults’ guide will pick you from the hotel/residence or airport and transfer to the lake for registration. You will board and start the 45 minutes to 1 hour boat ride. Upon arrival at Ngamba, you will be directed to the visitor’s center for an educational orientation by a chimpanzee caregiver and later walk to the platform to view the feeding along the edge of the sanctuary fence. It’s advisable to carry some lose cash (10-30$ per person or even more!) for donation as in most cases, visitors find the urge to donate something towards the chimps after listening to the moving talk about the life of Chimpanzees. Donations are optional, so don’t find yourself in a difficult position if not ready for it!
Ngamba Island is more than just a home for Chimpanzees but has got a wonderful beach where you can enjoy a good swim, kayaks, beach volley ball, meals, drinks and a curio shop. You will also be treated to the sights of monitor lizards, birds, and amazing photographic opportunities.
Later get back on the boat in time for your ride back to Entebbe mainland arriving at 12:45pm or 04:45pm (depending on which schedule you have booked). Meet Adventure Consults’ guide and transfer to the hotel/residence.
While on the boat, bottled water and life jackets are provided. Get in touch for reservations.
